I made this cast during the project sessions, and it truly felt like part of a healing process. I went back to my art historical roots whilst painting it and considered the sculptures I have always thought of as beautiful. I landed on black as the overall colour, to emulate the shiny dark surface of some bronze sculpture, like Donatello’s David from the 15th Century. The gold scars were inspired by Kintsugi, a Japanese technique for repairing pottery, where instead of concealing the joins, they are highlighted in gold, silver, or platinum. This way, the pottery becomes even more valuable after its repair. I repaired my scars with gold, to consider my healing. I do not want to hide anymore, I want to remember what I have been through, and value myself even more for it, as I have come out the other side.
