Penny, Glass Bead Carcinoma, 2024
Fabric, Embroidery Thread, Beads
The embroidery developed from drawings I made to help me understand the anatomy of my breast, the cancer,
the parts that were affected and were being removed.
With a diagnosis comes the learning of an entire technical/medical language that threatens to redefine who you are and how you experience yourself and your body.
I wanted to reclaim something of myself through
- Affirming the beautiful within the technical/medical; breast as blossoming nature, not just clinical matter
- Making associations with feminist uses of traditional women’s crafts; (we carry the wounds of the world upon our breasts),
- Echoing the Profane Embroidery Group; reconsidering the language of cancer as a kind of profanity written on our skin.
