These paintings are a document of my journey. The grenade represents my feelings of urgency and danger before I had surgery. The central panel is during my surgical journey, with the background designed to resemble that all-too-familiar pattern on hospital gowns. This period was a blur of fatigue, feeling like an octopus because of my drains and suction dressing, getting scanned because of unusual bruising, itching under plastic dressings, wincing as drains were removed, the list goes on. Finally, the last panel represents the present and future; the growth on the tree is my own growth post-surgery, and the roots are all the work I have put in to find stability now. There is still work to be done.
